Tim Burton has once again succeeded in making another film weirder than those currently in his portfolio (which includes such movies as Batman, Batman Returns, The Nightmare Before Christmas, and one of my favorites: Edward Scissorhands). This time he brings some really strange looking aliens from MARS to attack the Earth using new and expensive technologies such as computer animation to give the effect of cheap 50's style sci-fi special effects. The cast includes about everyone in Hollywood. Rather than list all of their names I'll just say that I enjoyed the performance of Jack Nicholson as the president and as a Las Vegas hotel tycoon. I also thought that Pierce Brosnan (the current James Bond) and Annette Bening were just perfect in their roles. I also liked Jim Brown as the former heavyweight boxing champion. Finally, none other than Martin Short could have played the role of the President's press secretary. Without him, the movie could not have worked. Danny Elfman once again provided his musical services to Burton. This is definitely not a surprise as he has composed the music for about every single one of Burton's films. And, as he has always done, Elfman provides a great musical score. This movie is very weird. But that did not prevent me from liking it. Personally, I thought it was hilarious. This is like no other movie. The humor does not arise from funny jokes or slapstick comedy such as the Three Stooges, but it is there nevertheless. Burton pokes fun in his own, unique way at many of the strange things in our own culture. The sheer absurdity of the film itself also kept me laughing.
