Visually stunning. Wildly entertaining. Refreshingly funny. Phrases like these keep entering my mind as I sit down to write this review. The makers of Toy Story have done it again. Pixar has created an animated feast that, in my opinion, and in the opinion of my daughter (who is my resident childrens-movie Advisor and Chief Expert), A Bug's Life is the best computer-animated movie yet.
The special effects, or, if you like, the "computer-animated visual extravaganza" simply blew me away. Every insect, every environment, even every blade of grass, was created for this virtual world. And we are indeed taken there.
What is perhaps more impressive, however, is the fact that Pixar can make bugs cute. I mean, think about it. What is every kid disgusted by? Bugs. Yet, in this movie, they are so cute. They are also very human-like. Just count their limbs. You'll get four (like humans) rather than the six that ants should have. This point has actually been a hot debate and has prompted many to praise this movie's major competitor, Antz, for being anatomically correct.
But what really matters? The point that I would like to get across is that this movie has something for everyone. Young children will love it. Teenagers will love it and identify with many of the characters trying to gain their own identities and independence. And adults will love it perhaps most of all. The humor in this movie is great. And much of the dialogue is actually intended for the adult audience.
Spectacular!
