This movie is fun. It is one of those let's-get-a-small-handful-of-likable-but-not-so-military-type-guys-to-save-the-world type of movies. Armageddon doesn't quite come close to the caliber of ID4: Independence Day, but it entertains; that is for sure.
This movie's strong point is definitely it's cast. How could you not enjoy watching Bruce Willis (left) save the day? And Steve Buscemi (right) was hilarious. Strange as ever, this time he plays a genius who enjoys the fast life and has little hope for the fate of the world. Walking that fine line of mental stability, he figures he might as well enjoy life as long as he's here. I also quite enjoyed watching Peter Stormare (Fargo, The Lost World) as the Russian cosmonaut aboard the Russian Space Station. And Billy Bob Thornton (below) was good as well. I must also comment that the humor in this movie was well done.
And every good save-the-world movie needs a good love story. This is provided by Ben Affleck (who did so-so) and Liv Tyler (who is beautiful and also she seems very different from her father, Steven). They did an OK job I guess.
What I was dissapointed in were: (1) the special effects, and (2) the music. The destruction of New York has been done in many movies, and this time around was not that great or realistic. The space shuttle scenes were pretty good, but I ask this question: Is it believable that two shuttles would launch at the same time so close together? As for the music, it was alright but not very memorable or noticable.
Nevertheless, however, this movie is a very good movie and I do recommend it. It does do what one of these movies should do at the end, make you cry and appreciate the life that you have while you have it.
Very entertaining.
