The fourth time around for Martin Riggs and Roger Murtaugh was fun, I'll give it that. And that really is what everyone is going to want to see it for anyway. However, if compared with other action films (including it's three predecessors) this one comes up a little short for one main reason. This movie is just a little too lighthearted. Watching this film, I was never really nervous for the safety of any of our heroes because the mood of the movie never relenquished its this-is-just-a-movie-so-let's-have-fun-with-it attitude. The characters, the action scenes, and the story itself was just too fake for me, too movielike, and not real anymore. This time around Riggs and Murtaugh were characters in a movie, not cops on the street.
So given that, was it still entertaining? Yes. Riggs (Mel Gibson) and Murtaugh (Danny Glover) were very funny arguing about different aspects of life while involved in shootouts and car chases. And Joe Pesci returned as the annoying, fast-talking, wannabe cop, Leo Getz and was hilarious once again. The beautiful Rene Russo was there too, although she was not featured enough in my opinion. However, she did get to show off her karate skills quite nicely in one scene. And this movie added a new character, Lee Butters (played by Chris Rock). When Rock and Pesci get together on screen, they were very funny as they complained about some of the hassles of modern life.
The ending to this movie reminded me of Father of the Bride II or Nine Months, as Murtaugh became a grandfather and Riggs became a father. It was quite fun to watch and provided a good way to end the movie with a group/family photo.
It's not the best of the four, but it is one of the most fun.
