The first word that comes to mind upon reflection of this movie is "inspirational." The notions of nobility, chivalry, and honor are all but forgotten in our society today, but this movie brings them back to life. And at the same time, this movie provides a wonderful story, memorable characters, and pure excitement.
However, one cannot even speak of this movie without raving about the awesome cast. Frankly, I have never before seen such a stellar lineup. We first meet Jeremy Irons (right) whose voice I could never tire of hearing. He plays Aramis, the former musketeer turned priest. His struggle with guilt can be seen from the opening scene in which he proclaims what he believes to be the most divine thing in all the world: forgiveness. Irons is simply magnificent in this role. The second of the legendary Three Musketeers is Porthos, played by Gerard Depardieu (middle). His lust for life, and temporary lack thereof, provide much of the humor in the film. Completing the trio is Athos, played by one of my personal favorites, John Malkovich (left). I have enjoyed every Malkovich performance that I have seen; this movie does not make untrue this statement. He is brilliant in this role as we see him become consumed by revenge. And as if this list of actors is not enough, Gabriel Byrne turns in a masterpiece of a performance as d'Artagnan. d'Artagnan's struggle between duty and justice perhaps steals the show.
And how can I not mention Leonardo DiCaprio who turns in not one, but two great performances? It was quite interesting to see this popular icon and object of many young women's affections portray such an evil and unlikable young King Louis XIV. And then he added to this movie the kind-hearted and severely mistreated twin brother Philippe. DiCaprio showed so well the arrogance, Machiavellian pride, and hatred of Louis, and then he turned around and showed the fear, compassion, and dignity of his brother.
There were other great performances too. Each character was portrayed perfectly. Such great acting, along with wonderful scenery and costumes make this movie a masterpiece.
Perhaps what this movie could have done a better job at doing was show a greater struggle for sanity and forgiveness on the part of Philippe. However, this does not detriment the movie in the least. It remains as one of the best of the year.
Inspirational!
