This movie did not rate very high on my scale. Little did I know that it would end up this way, because at the start of the movie, I was thinking that this was one of the most amazing movies that I have ever seen.
The movie starts with one long, long continuous shot. It must have lasted over 20 minutes; possibly more. I wish I would have timed it. Anyway, the scene is amazing not just for its longevity, but for its mobility, its scope, and Nicolas Cage. The scene follows Cage as Rick Santoro, a fast-talking Atlantic City cop, who is making his way through the back tunnels of a boxing arena to his seat. The scene continues on as he watches the fight, and eventually witnesses an assasination. This opening scene is, in my opinion, the best that I have yet seen.
Nicolas Cage does not dissapoint either. It is simply captivating to watch this fast-talking cop slowly piece together what turns out to be a conspiracy.
However, an unbelievable plot and just plain bad acting slowly eat away at what could have been a great movie. I am especially dissapointed in Gary Sinise. Gary, what happened to you? You SUCKED in this movie! I loved you in Forrest Gump, and I thought that your performance as Harry S Truman in HBO's Truman was one of the best performances that I have ever seen. But it seemed like in Snake Eyes you could barely even remember your lines, much less make a character out of them. Shame on you!
Brian De Palma threw in one last visually stunning scene to try to save this movie: an overhead shot moving from room to room in a hotel until we wind up to the room in which the story is taking place. It was a great shot, but from there the movie fell apart...quickly.
Visually, this movie is a 10. However, the plot and some bad acting bring it down.
