We were looking for a fun movie to see with the family during Spring Break and we read a quick synopsis of Race to Witch Mountain online. It seemed exciting so we thought we'd give it a shot. We are so glad that we did.
Dwayne Johnson is Jack Bruno, a name that one would not soon forget after having seen this film (an inside joke for those who have seen it already). Jack Bruno is a taxi driver in Las Vegas who is trying to live a clean life after a regrettable past as a driver for the Mafia. One day not too long after what appears to be a UFO is sighted in the Nevada desert, Jack Bruno finds 2 kids with a lot of cash in the back of his taxi. They appear to be in some sort of danger and are desperate to get to their destination. So begins a wild adventure chock full of car chases, close encounters, and just plain fun.
My family and I loved this movie. It can be a bit corny or cheesy at times, but it is a great escape from life's seriousness and problems. The kids, Seth and Sara (Alexander Ludwig and AnnaSophia Robb) are refreshingly unique, and Dwayne Johnson (aka, "The Rock") is really funny. This is a lighthearted film, and Johnson's character carries us through a series of outlandish experiences to which his character alternates between a brave action hero and a helpless, confused, and normal human being. I also liked seeing Carla Gugino (the mom from Spy Kids) as Dr. Alex Friedman. She had a good chemistry with Johnson while not being over-the-top.
On the down side, I have a few minor complaints. First and foremost, this movie, for whatever reason, enjoys poking fun at Star Wars and its loyal enthusiasts. I consider myself a loyal fan of the Star Wars films and felt somewhat offended at this. I was also somewhat disappointed by the special effects. I know that this was not a major action blockbuster deserving of a huge budget, and I also realize that we are all spoiled nowadays with stellar effects in movies, but given the landscape it does stand out when things aren't up to par. Such was the case here. And finally, I didn't get the title of the movie: Race to Witch Mountain. There was no race, and no witch. There was a mountain, but 1 out of 3 doesn't seem like a good percentage when coming up with a title.
However, this is a movie for kids (probably older kids) and their families. The content is appropriate for them, and the film has much to offer: action, suspense, mystery, fantasy, and fun. It was refreshing to see a movie again after many months of not being interested in anything that Hollywood had to offer. And if this one was even advertised at all, I missed it. I encourage you to catch this one that might otherwise slip by.
The race is on!
