Anger Management - you'd think Adam Sandler and Jack Nicholson would be a great pair...you'd think but you'd be wrong

Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl - an unforgettable performance that seems to have the ladies swooning
Honorable Mention:
Tom Cruise as Captain Nathan Algren in The Last Samurai - Cruise shows us an Algren who is transformed from a washed out alcoholic into a Samurai warrior worthy of honor - he acted, fought, and spoke Japanese in this film all of which were done very well
Will Ferrell as Buddy the Elf in Elf - who else could have pulled this off? Ferrell's child-like enthusiasm is contagious in this movie

Paul Walker as Chris Johnston in Timeline - his character is meaningless

Nicole Kidman as Ada Monroe in Cold Mountain - she didn't have much competition in leading female roles

Geoffrey Rush as Captain Barbossa in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl - he was admirably erudite yet wickedly evil, but fun to watch through and through
Honorable Mention:
Ian McKellen as Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King - it just wouldn't be the same without him
Lambert Wilson as The Merovingian in The Matrix Reloaded and Matrix Revolutions - I'll never forget his line, "I love to curse in French. It's like wiping your ass with silk."
Ken Watanabe as Katsumoto in The Last Samurai - whether you think of him as friend or foe, you think of him with respect
Sean Astin as Samwise Gamgee in The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King - Sam is the true hero of this story. It's his shoulders upon which Frodo can stand.

Toby Stephens as Gustav Graves in James Bond: Die Another Day - can you say "overactor"?

Natalie Portman as Sara in Cold Mountain - her role is brief, but the memory of it lasts forever
Honorable Mention:
Kathy Baker as Sally in Cold Mountain - the transformation of her character is remarkable and sad
Renée Zellweger as Ruby in Cold Mountain - she's fun to watch as a back-woods girl who doesn't take crap from anybody
Liv Tyler as Arwen in The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King - whether speaking Elvish or remaining silent, she communicates directly and effectively with the expression of her beautiful face

I'm happy to report that there weren't really any bad actresses this year

Peter Jackson - The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King - Jackson's accomplishment with this trilogy is unrivaled

Richard Donner - Timeline - this accomplished director really screwed up here. The movie has no flow and seems illogical at times

Natalie Portman as Sara in Cold Mountain - Natalie, will you marry me?

Liv Tyler as Arwen in The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King - whether speaking Elvish or remaining silent, she communicates directly and effectively with the expression of her beautiful face
Miranda Otto as Eowyn in The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King - she is so beautiful and so sad which makes her so much more beautiful, for there truly is beauty in sadness
Rosamund Pike as Miranda Frost in James Bond: Die Another Day - is she good or evil? Who cares? She's hot!
Marisa Tomei as Linda in Anger Management - she is one of the all time babes
Fann Wong as Chon Lin in Shanghai Knights - a babe who can fight...that's my kind of chick!

Peta Wilson as Mina Harker from The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen - she is a vampire chick which is very scary, but she's still quite hot
Honorable Mention:
Kristanna Loken as Terminator T-X in Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines - although she's nice to look at, I wouldn't want to be on the same planet with her

Ted Elliot and Terry Rossio for Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl - it's adventuresome, scary, funny and marvelously well done

Alec Berg, David Mandel, and Jeff SchafferThe Cat in the Hat - But for Alec, Jeff, and Dave, It seems no sane critic would ever rave.

Howard Shore - The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King - Shore's score is not a bore, but leaves us begging for more

Worst Musical Score:
Nothing really stuck out this year as being bad, musically, which is a good thing

Best Special Effects or Animation:
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King - one look at Gollum and you're a believer
Honorable Mention:
Brother Bear - such beautiful landscapes...wow
X2: X-Men United - amazing mutants and dazzling sequences
The Matrix Reloaded and Matrix Revolutions - we can't take these for granted, for they've raised the bar significantly in the area of special effects

Timeline - this movie would have been a LOT better with some decent special effects, especially during the time traveling

Best Costumes and Scenery:
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King - no other movie could even come close to matching the splendorous beauty of New Zealand nor the elegance and intricacy of costumes for all manner of people and creatures of Middle Earth
